Business Owners Can Now Respond to Reviews on Google Place Pages

Verified Google Places business owners can now publicly respond to user reviews on their businesses’ Place Page. This new feature further bridges the divide between Places and its biggest competitor, Yelp.
For business owners, the ability to publicly respond to reviews — positive or negative — can be a great way to engage with customers, correct or address certain issues, and, when necessary, set the record straight. Yelp (
) introduced a similar feature last year, and business owners and users have responded positively to the ability to interact.
In order to leave a response, owners first need to verify their identity with Google (
) by going to the Google Places main page and claiming their listing.

It’s always been important to research the company before going on an interview. This was traditionally accomplished by looking at the corporate website or sifting through media clippings. Now, you can read what’s on the CEO’s mind through his blog, see what customers are chatting about on Twitter, connect with current and former employees on LinkedIn and look through photos from the last company picnic on Facebook. Not every job seeker will tap into the wealth of information available through the social web — so if you do, you’ll stand out.

Facebook on Wednesday announced a remarkable milestone: 500 million active monthly users. And the velocity of its growth raises a mind-boggling possibility: Could Facebook reach 1 billion “friends” next year? That would be roughly 1 out of every 7 human beings on the planet.
If Facebook gallops ahead at its current pace, the 1 billion mark would indeed be reached in 2011. The online social network Mark Zuckerberg and a few Harvard classmates founded in 2004 went from zero to 250 million users in five years — and doubled that number over the past 12 months despite controversy regarding its privacy protocols.
Zuckerberg, 26, has said the 1 billion milestone is “almost a guarantee” — not a matter of if, but when.
A Look Back at the Last 5 Years in Social Media

Five years ago, YouTube was just getting started, MySpace was the most popular website in the U.S., and Facebook was still limited to college and high school students. Mobile was mostly an after-thought, as we were still more than a year away from the introduction of the iPhone and the idea of an app store. Spend at least as much time listening as you do broadcasting.
Losing followers is okay, measure the engagement level of who is still here to see how you are doing.
Marketers aren’t always synonymous with community builders, traffic and followers isn’t always equal to credibility.
Try a new platform each month, video blogging, FaceBook, tumblr etc. Curiosity can lead to great discoveries.
